Online hair loss programs compared, and the year it takes to know

No affiliate links on this page. We earn no commission from any program listed, nobody paid to appear here, and the order is not for sale.

These services differ less on the medicine than on how it is packaged. Finasteride and minoxidil are the active ingredients across nearly all of them. What changes is whether you get a manufactured generic at a standard strength or a compounded formula mixed to a per-patient recipe, what the consult costs, and how far ahead you have to pay.

The reason this page exists is the timeline. These treatments only work while they are being taken, and visible change generally takes months. That leaves a long stretch where you are doing something daily with no feedback at all, which is where most people quietly stop.

Emerge Health AI does not prescribe and does not assess your hair. It is a wellness app, not a medical device. What it does is hold the adherence record and answer the questions that come up in month three, with sources you can open.

These are numbered, not ranked. Each entry leads with the one thing it is factually best at. We do not score these programs on the quality of their clinical care.

Longest prepay intervals

Keeps

A narrow, cheap generics catalogue built around finasteride and minoxidil, shipped in three, six or twelve-month blocks.

  • A deliberately narrow catalogue rather than a menu to decide between
  • Manufactured generics at standard strengths
  • Three, six or twelve-month delivery blocks
  • No separate consult fee published

What it leaves to you

  • Longer delivery blocks mean paying further ahead, which is a commitment made before you know how you respond.
  • Prices are shown after an intake rather than on a public pricing page, so the figure here is third-party sourced.
  • The catalogue is narrow by design. If a standard strength does not suit you, there is less to adjust to.
Lowest generic starting price

Hims

The broadest catalogue of the generics-based services, spanning oral tablets and topical spray combinations.

  • Both oral and topical routes inside one catalogue
  • Manufactured generics at standard strengths
  • The same account if you already use the company for another category
  • Subscription delivery with the cadence set at checkout

What it leaves to you

  • Every figure here is third-party sourced, because pricing appears only after an intake questionnaire.
  • On 29 July 2026 the FTC, joined by the State of Utah and the County of Los Angeles, filed a complaint in the Northern District of California alleging the company shared consumer health information with third-party advertising platforms including Meta and Snap, and used deceptive subscription billing and cancellation practices. Hims & Hers denies the allegations and says it intends to defend itself. The case is unresolved and nothing here is a finding of wrongdoing, but if health-data privacy or ease of cancellation matters to you, it is a public filing worth reading first.
  • A broad catalogue means more choices to make, and the difference between an oral and a topical route is a clinical question rather than a preference.
Most customised formulations

Happy Head

Dermatologist-formulated compounded topicals, mixing finasteride, minoxidil and other actives to a per-patient recipe.

  • Formulations mixed to your prescriber’s recipe rather than a fixed strength
  • The widest customisation of any service on this page
  • Both topical and oral routes
  • Dermatologist involvement in formulating

What it leaves to you

  • Compounded products are prepared by a pharmacy rather than reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality before sale. That is a real distinction from a manufactured generic and worth raising with a clinician who knows your history.
  • It is the highest per-formulation price here, and a combined routine can mean more than one of them.
  • A custom recipe is harder to compare against anything else, including against your own previous formulation.
Multi-ingredient topicals

Musely

Prescription topicals combining several actives in one formulation, with a low one-time consult fee up front.

  • Several actives combined into a single nightly product
  • A $20 one-time consult rather than a recurring fee
  • Prescription topicals across more than one concern
  • Subscription delivery

What it leaves to you

  • Compounded products are prepared by a pharmacy rather than reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality before sale.
  • Combining several actives in one product makes it harder to tell which one is responsible if something irritates.
  • Every figure here is third-party sourced, because pricing follows an intake questionnaire.

Common questions

Can Emerge Health AI prescribe finasteride or minoxidil?

No. Emerge is a wellness app, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, prescribe, or give dosing advice. The services on this page are the ones that prescribe.

What is the difference between a manufactured generic and a compounded formula?

A manufactured generic is an FDA-approved medication produced to a standard strength, which is what Hims and Keeps largely supply. A compounded formula is mixed by a pharmacy to a per-patient recipe and is not reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality before sale, which is the Happy Head and Musely model. Which suits you is a question for the prescriber.

Why does adherence matter so much here?

These treatments work only while taken, and visible change typically takes months rather than weeks. That gap between starting and seeing anything is where most people stop, and it is the single thing a daily log is most useful for.

Can Emerge tell me whether my side effects are normal?

It can tell you what the published sources say, with the citation attached so you can read openFDA, DailyMed or MedlinePlus yourself. It cannot tell you whether to continue, stop or change anything. That is a conversation with your prescriber.

How we compare

Services are compared only on facts that can be verified in public: what they prescribe, what they charge, whether a consult is billed separately, and whether the formulation is a manufactured generic or a compounded mixture.

We do not rate these services on how well they work, and we do not compare outcomes. Neither is a claim we are equipped to make.

Every figure is marked for how it was checked. A filled marker means it was read off that company’s public page. A hollow marker means it came from a dated third-party review.

Prices in this category are usually shown only after an intake questionnaire, so more figures here are third-party sourced than we would like. Corrections to hello@getemergeapp.com.

Where Emerge fits, on any of them

Emerge cannot prescribe, assess your scalp, or tell you whether something is working. It is the daily record and the cited answer, across the months where nothing visible is happening yet.

  • Log the daily dose or application, so adherence is a record rather than an impression. On a treatment that only works while taken, that record is the treatment.
  • Ask what a reported side effect actually means and get an answer citing openFDA, DailyMed or MedlinePlus, with the link, rather than a forum thread at midnight.
  • Keep a private journal across the months before anything is visible, encrypted on your phone.
  • Track blood pressure alongside it if you are on anything that warrants watching, with staging, so a trend is visible early.
  • Nothing is stored on a server and no conversation is logged.
