What does titration mean?

Updated 2026-08 2 sources 1 min

Titration means starting a medicine at a low amount and adjusting gradually rather than beginning at the intended long-term amount. It is standard practice for many medicines, not something specific to weight management.

There are two reasons for it. Side effects are often worst when the body first encounters a medicine and settle with time, so a gradual approach gives that adjustment room. And the amount that suits one person is not the amount that suits another, so the process is partly about finding yours.

The steps and the intervals are set by whoever is prescribing, informed by the label and by how you respond. That is why this page describes what the word means rather than what your schedule should be: the second is a clinical decision and genuinely individual.
