What does a vitamin D test measure?
A vitamin D test measures a particular form of the vitamin circulating in your blood, which reflects both what you get from sunlight and what comes from food or supplements. It is not routinely done for everyone.
Testing is more usual where there is a reason to suspect a problem, such as bone symptoms, certain digestive conditions affecting absorption, limited sun exposure, or medicines known to interfere with vitamin D.
More is not simply better. Very high levels from over-supplementing can cause harm, which is why the amount to take, if any, is a question for a clinician rather than something to scale up on your own after reading a result.
