How do you read a lipid panel?
A lipid panel reports several measurements rather than a single cholesterol number: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. They are reported together because the relationship between them carries more meaning than any one alone.
LDL is the one most often described as the number treatment targets. HDL behaves differently from the others in how it is interpreted, and triglycerides are a separate fat that responds noticeably to recent eating and alcohol, which is why fasting is sometimes requested beforehand.
What counts as a concerning result depends on your overall cardiovascular risk rather than the number in isolation, which is why the same LDL can mean different things for two people. Reference ranges also differ between laboratories. This is a discussion to have with the clinician who ordered it.
